When Lyndsay suggested that we use a doula to support us through the birth of our second child, I have to admit to being sceptical. I wasn’t convinced that it was entirely necessary, even after what we went through with our first. However, meeting with Nikki to discuss what she could do for us helped me to understand that there is a lot of things that can happen that you don’t want to happen if you don’t have a voice when it matters – perhaps because you’re too busy having a baby, or worrying about someone else who’s having a baby. Nikki can be that voice, and also provide personal support to both parents during birth. Nikki gave brilliant support to both Lyndsay and myself and helped make our daughter’s entry into the world a much happier experience for everyone
Pregnancy and Birth Antenatal Workshop
Pregnancy passes by so quickly, often things can be overlooked and decisions can be made without any real research going into it. The physiology of birth is often not discussed fully during your pregnancy and sometimes you can be unaware of the normal physiological changes your body will prepare for and you can be overwhelmed by the process once labour arrives. Some of the topics we will cover are below:
- Debrief/listening session of any previous experiences
- Birth physiology and understanding the birth process
- Recognising labour onset
- Active birth
- Optimal fetal positioning
- Pain management
- Information regarding childbirth and interventions
- Infant feeding
- Caring for your newborn and yourself
- Building your birth preferences or birth ‘plan’
On your journey to motherhood, you can never start too early in ensuring you have the skills needed in your family toolbox to prepare you for any issues you may come across as a new parent. One of those skills is infant feeding, regardless of how you choose to feed your baby. Breastfeeding is the perfect way to nourish your baby and help support you both in the early days of parenthood.
An important part of information gathering is finding good support, early on. There is evidence to show, breastfeeding parents are set up to succeed in their breastfeeding journey when they benefit from antenatal education. I believe that support and information is beneficial to new parents in the antenatal period before baby arrives so mums, dads and their families are armed with the correct information for them to make informed decisions postnatally. Having an understanding during your pregnancy of breastfeeding and the things you might expect during your journey can put you in a great, confident position as a new mum. Midwives, with their busy schedules and their heavy caseloads are not always equipped with the additional time needed to spend with new parents and hand outs are usually dismissed and popped into the recycling bin-one to one interactive workshops can help to support your skills as you transition into motherhood. In the Breastfeeding Workshop you will:
- Learn about the biological and practical aspects of breastfeeding
- Positioning and Attachment
- Breastfeeding Basics
- What to expect in the early days
- Breast Milk:Expressing and Storage
- Tips and tricks to overcome any issues in the early days and weeks
With over 11 years of experience in Breastfeeding Support working and volunteering alongside several national breastfeeding support organisations and NHS services, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and skills through training and experience to support women to successfully breastfeed their babies and signpost to early help if you find any issues in those early days. Good links with other Healthcare Professionals including Lactation Consultants and Midwives across the North West ensures you can be referred to a competent professional first time, if you should need specialist support from a Lactation Consultant. I can provide private one to one home visits for Breastfeeding Support in Manchester, Stockport, Cheshire and the other areas I cover-you can contact me for details of one to one breastfeeding support, without the need for a postnatal package in place.
Nikki’s knowledge is fantastic,
we asked her to help with Breastfeed ing & Rebozo Antenatal Workshop and because it was done one to one with us at home it felt very relaxed but at the same time informativ e which as meant both myself and husband can now make an informed decision about our wishes both for the birth and also for feeding the baby. It’s reassuring to know that the back up is also there from Nikki in terms of Postnatal support if required. Thanks x

Rebozo and Belly Mapping Workshop
Malpositioning can be described in many ways. Your midwife or obstetrician may suggest that baby is breech, posterior, back to back or transverse. In this interactive workshop you will discover ways to recognise your baby’s position and find ways to relax your ligaments and tendons to make space within the pelvis using a series of techniques known as Rebozo Sifting.
A rebozo is a long scarf, usually 4-5 metres long of Mexican tradition and is able to wrap comfortably around a woman’s body. The rebozo can be used in pregnancy and labour safely with several benefits including relaxation and to prevent posterior or back to back babies.
Belly Mapping is a fun way to discover which position your baby is in and by listening to your babies patterns through relaxation and breathing you can use these skills alongside rebozo to help malpositioning. Included in the Rebozo and Belly Mapping workshop:
- Learn techniques to optimise positioning and recognise malpositioning (posterior or ‘back to back’)
- Learn to use a rebozo with your partner or friend for practical support and relaxation
- Belly Mapping
- Optimal Fetal Positioning
